Landgoed Wichersoord, Landmetersweg 2D

Beautiful bungalow located on the Wichersoord Estate. The house sleeps 6 people. You can relax on the private grounds or by the pool.

History

The Wichersoord Estate is the first newly developed estate on Walcheren in a century and a half. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Walcheren countryside was home to more than 270 estates and country houses, and the northwest coast of Walcheren was also known as the Gold Coast. Only 12 of these remain today.

The Wichersoord Estate, covering 6.2 hectares, is part of the traditional Zeeland walking area Buiten Pekelynge, registered under the Nature Conservation Act, with over 18 hectares of woodland surrounding a beautiful water feature teeming with fish and birds. It is designed in the English landscape style with rolling lines and winding paths. Due to its location, the estate is connected to the Manteling, the beautiful forest and dune area between Domburg and Oostkapelle, with cycling and walking paths.

From the 17th century onward, prosperity on Walcheren increased significantly, partly due to various trading companies in Middelburg and Vlissingen. Income from foreign trade and the flourishing of the associated crafts created wealth. The companies' shipyards also provided ample employment. The wealthy bourgeoisie (nobility and wealthy merchants) established country estates for themselves, surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens. As a result, Walcheren was known for centuries as the Garden of Zeeland, an idyllic island with small-scale housing developments, leafy roads, pollard willows, green hedges, and vistas. It was definitively lost when the Allies bombed the dikes in 1944-1945, and the sea flooded the island for a year to drive out the occupiers.

Enjoy the Walcheren region

The estate is located near the wide beaches of Oostkapelle and Domburg, which have been awarded the international Blue Flag. Nearby are several riding stables, the Domburg Golf Club, and the charming village center of Domburg. According to insiders, Domburg is the oldest seaside resort in the Netherlands; in the past, artists such as Jan Toorop and Piet Mondrian settled there to immortalize the Zeeland skies. Even today, Domburg has lost none of its former grandeur!

The Veerse Meer lake is also nearby, an attractive water sports area for sailors, surfers, anglers, and divers, with the romantic harbor town of Veere at its center.

The Estate

A main building consisting of three residential units, a management house, and an outbuilding have since been built on the estate, entirely in accordance with provincial guidelines: a 21st-century country house with all the associated comforts, but with a nod to the 19th century. Typical of the country houses of the Zeeland patricians are the towers. These towers likely served to provide views over the island and the sea, and they evoked Italian architecture. Wichersoord, too, therefore boasts a small tower, with a second-floor balcony offering panoramic views of the surrounding area, including the Domburg water tower. A beautifully integrated and comfortably heated natural swimming pool, integrated into the water feature, was also a must-have for this estate.

Both the grounds and buildings of Wichersoord are held by a foundation/private limited company. The primary objective of this foundation is to protect and preserve this unique nature reserve for the long term. It strives to achieve this by preserving the forest, waterways, and gardens in their natural state as much as possible. This also applies to the main house and the outbuildings. However, the foundation's board is aware that, given its limited resources and size, sustainable maintenance of the estate is only possible through the recreational rental of the main and outbuildings. Opening the walking area to the public also contributes to financial sustainability through the Nature Conservation Act. Finally, to make the estate energy-neutral and sustainable, a small portion of the land has been dedicated to solar panels without compromising the natural value. *Use the pool at your own risk
